WINNERS!!! Atlantic Rowing Race

The Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Race is by far one of the toughest races in the world and for even the most experienced rowers it’s a massive and dangerous journey. The race starts in the Canary Islands and finishes on the other side of the Atlantic in the Caribbean.

Surfing buddies, Bill Godfrey and Peter van Kets are South Africa’s Team Gquma. Bill has a lifetime of ocean experience and has rowed for the South African national squad on numerous occasions (and also in Europe with London Rowing Club). Peter is a South African canoe silver medallist and has paddled many extreme ocean races and World Championships. He is an accomplished sailor and navigator with 5 ocean crossings under his belt.

For the last 2 weeks, in a small port called La Gomera, the international fleet of 22 boats have been doing final preparations for the 5000km of untamed ocean. To be able to partake in this race entrants have to pull together a total of at least R1,4 million and thanks to their sponsors, the 3 years of preparation has pulled off and they have made it to the start. They have prepared in every way they can – from safety and navigation courses through to vigorous training programs.
On the 2nd December 2007 the two South Africans in their boat “Gquma” took on the worlds toughest ocean challenge and set off from the same port Christopher Columbus used, La Gomera in the Canary Islands. They have to be totally self-sufficient taking all their food with them and relying on a water de-salinator to make their fresh water.
Twenty-four hours a day for six weeks, the friendship of Bill and Pete will be tested as they live together in the confines of a 7m rowboat on the expanses of the Atlantic Ocean.
Depending on the weather conditions they will each have to do about      1330 000 strokes with their oars and will take them between 37 – 50 days of unsupported non-stop rowing. Facing serious life threatening odds – fatigue, dehydration, heat exhaustion, sunburn, storms and huge waves, these two South Africans will have to overcome extreme hardship to accomplish their dream, crossing an ocean and hopefully winning the race.

There is a very good cause behind them doing this race; they are hoping to raise at least R5 million for the Thabo Mbeki Development Trust for the Disabled.

One boat “C2” has already retired after there was a man overboard situation – both crew members are now safe.
